Breast Ultrasound
A breast ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive scan that uses sound waves to create images of the breast tissue. It helps evaluate lumps, pain, or changes found during a physical exam or mammogram. It’s commonly used for further assessment in women with dense breast tissue and is safe during pregnancy .
Breast ultrasound is useful in the following situations :
When the breast is dense on a mammogram. as this reduces the sensitivity of the mammogram (but ultrasound DOES NOT replace a mammogram).
During pregnancy to avoid radiation from a mammogram.
Young patients under the age of 40 years before mammogram screening begins
Breast Ultrasound in Men
Although breast conditions are less common in men, ultrasound is a valuable tool for evaluating lumps or other changes. It helps distinguish between benign issues like gynecomastia (enlarged breast tissue) and possible male breast cancer. Ultrasound is often the first imaging step, especially in younger men or when mammogram results are unclear.

Preparation for Breast Ultrasound
-
Please avoid applying powder, lotion, or deodorant on your chest or underarms on the day of your scan, especially if a mammogram may also be needed.
-
Wear a separate top and bottom to make changing easier if a gown is required.
-
The scan is safe at any point in your menstrual cycle, and is suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it uses no radiation.
-
During the scan, you will lie on your back with your arm raised above your head.
-
A water-based gel will be applied to your breast, and a small probe will be used to examine the breast and underarm area. The gel is chemical-free and easily wiped off afterward.
-
You’re welcome to ask questions after the scan
