Gynaecological / Pelvic Ultrasound
A gynae ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive scan used to examine the female pelvic organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and endometrium (lining of the womb).
It helps assess menstrual issues, pelvic pain/mass, endometriosis, fibroids, cysts, fertility concerns, and other gynaecological conditions such as pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).
PID is an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries, often causing lower abdominal pain. Ultrasound helps detect enlarged tubes or abscesses in the pelvic area.
The gynae scan may be performed abdominally or internally (transvaginally), depending on the reason for the examination.
Preparation for Gynaecological Ultrasound
Transabdominal scan:
-
Please arrive with a full bladder. Drink about 750ml of water an hour before your appointment and do not urinate until after the scan. A full bladder helps provide a clearer image of the pelvic organs.

Transvaginal (Internal) scan
No special preparation is needed. You will be asked to empty your bladder before the scan for best results. This scan is often done when more detailed images are required.

If you're unsure which type of scan you are having, please contact us for guidance.
