Prostate Ultrasound
A prostate ultrasound is a safe, quick procedure used to assess the size, shape, and condition of the prostate gland. It is commonly performed to investigate urinary symptoms, elevated PSA levels, or other prostate concerns. The scan is usually done transrectally (via the rectum) for clearer images but can also be done transabdominally.
Preparation
-
If d0ne transrectally, Use a mild enema 1–2 hours before the scan to empty the rectum. This helps improve image quality.
-
If done transabdominally, a full bladder is required, Drink at least 4 to 6 glasses of water an hour before the exam.
-
No fasting is required.
-
You will typically lie on your side with your knees bent (transrectally) or on your back (transabdominally).
-
Transrectally, A small, lubricated ultrasound probe (transducer) is gently inserted into the rectum.
-
Some individuals may experience mild discomfort or pressure during probe insertion and while the probe is in place.
-
Wear comfortable clothing. You may be asked to change into a gown.
